Pedestals

An office pedestal is a compact drawer unit designed to store documents, stationery and personal items close to the user’s workstation. It can be positioned beneath or beside an office desk, depending on its dimensions and configuration. Pedestals are commonly used in individual workstations, benching systems, manager offices and shared office areas where accessible personal storage is required.

A mobile pedestal is equipped with casters and can be repositioned when the workstation layout changes. A fixed pedestal is attached to or supported by the desk structure and becomes part of the workstation. Mobile models offer greater flexibility, while fixed models may provide a more integrated appearance. The appropriate type depends on the desk design, available legroom and frequency of layout changes.

Check the pedestal’s overall height, width and depth against the clear space beneath the desk—not only the desktop dimensions. Allow room for desk frames, beams, cable trays, power modules and the user’s legs. For height-adjustable desks, also confirm that the pedestal will not obstruct the desk at its lowest position or interfere with moving components.

The right configuration depends on what will be stored. A combination of shallow utility drawers and one deeper filing drawer is useful for stationery, personal items and hanging files. Two-drawer configurations may provide more space for larger items, while three-drawer pedestals offer more detailed organization. Buyers should review the internal drawer dimensions rather than selecting only by the number of drawers.

Selected filing drawers can be configured for A4, Letter or other common document formats, including hanging files. Compatibility depends on the internal drawer dimensions and the direction in which the files are arranged. Buyers should provide the file format and storage method used in their market so that the correct rails, dividers or hanging-file accessories can be confirmed before production.

Many office pedestals use a central lock that secures multiple drawers with one key. Some models may also support replaceable lock cylinders or key-management options for larger projects. These locks are suitable for everyday office privacy and document control, but highly sensitive records may require a storage product with a higher certified security level.

An anti-tilt or interlock mechanism limits the number of drawers that can be fully opened at the same time. This helps reduce the risk of the pedestal becoming unstable when a heavily loaded drawer is extended. The user should still distribute weight properly, avoid overloading drawers and keep the pedestal on a level surface.

Steel pedestals are often selected for their durability, slim construction and suitability for high-use commercial offices. Wooden or melamine-finished pedestals can coordinate more closely with desk surfaces and other office furniture. The decision should consider appearance, expected usage, cleaning requirements, moisture exposure and the finishes already specified for the workstation project.

Some M&W pedestal models are supplied fully assembled and protected with a carton and internal cushioning, allowing them to be used after unpacking. Packaging and assembly status can vary by model, order quantity and shipping method. For export projects, buyers should confirm the packing dimensions, gross weight, pallet requirements and whether keys and removable accessories are packed separately.

Provide the required quantity, preferred material, overall dimensions, drawer configuration, file format, lock requirements, color or finish and delivery destination. It is also helpful to share the desk model or under-desk clearance if the pedestal must fit a specific workstation. For project orders, M&W can coordinate pedestal finishes with the desks and other office storage products.
